If we discover misalignments of the joints of your spine, adjustments to these specific vertebral restrictions will be performed. These misalignments (called subluxations) can result in tightness and discomfort and, if neglected, may result in degeneration of the only spine we are going to have.
HOW: Using a gentle force, we will determine the most comfortable way restore motion to these joints.
WHY: Correcting spinal subluxations improves flexibility, relieves pain, maintains healthy joints, and allows for proper functioning of the nervous system. Maintaining proper movement of the spine will allow you to move more safely and comfortably and keeps you enjoying the active lifestyle you desire.
Adjustments are not just for the spine, however. Frequently the joints of our extremities can become misaligned and require manipulation to restore normal biomechanics as well.
WHY: Just like the spine, proper mechanics of our extremities keeps us moving well and may allow for healing of those nagging joint issues that have kept you from doing what you love.
Dr. Mortenson has over 20 years of experience managing extremity complaints of his active clients.
soft tissue techniques
Joint dysfunction frequently causes our muscles and fascia to be overworked resulting in tightness and discomfort and can lead to the development of trigger points and adhesions within and between these tissues.
WHY: Releasing tightness and adhesions within these tissues results in increased flexibility, pain relief, and improved function. Addressing both the structural misalignments and the associated soft tissue dysfunction of your specific complaint allows you to feel better fast and gets you back to doing what you want to do.
Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) may be uses as part of your treatment. EMS produces light electrical impulses that are transmitted through electrodes placed over the treatment area. This encourages relaxation as the therapy relieves muscle tension and promotes the release of endorphins in the body.
Ultrasound pushes sound wave vibrations deep into soft tissues. The result of these vibrations in our soft tissues comes in the form of localized heat. The heat from ultrasound can promote healing through increased circulation and the removal of unwanted waste products.
These modalities may be used to improve your healing response.
rehabilitative and mobility exercises
Muscle imbalances (tightness or weakness) cause discomfort and alters normal joint function further complicating a movement issue. We will work to identify any such imbalances and correct them through prescribed stretching and strengthening exercises.
WHY: Improving mobility and building strength will not only help rectify the current issue, but it will also prevent re-injury and improve overall performance.
lifestyle and nutritional guidance
My goal is to help my clients achieve a level of health that allows them to live a fulfilling lifestyle filled with enjoyable activity, high levels of performance, and a feeling of general well-being. One of the most common questions new clients have is “how did I end up like this” and “what can I do to prevent this from happening in the future”. This requires a thorough review of their current posture, movement patterns, activity level, rest/sleep habits, and diet.
HOW: We will work together to determine what lifestyle patterns may have contributed to a client’s issues and what changes are possible to promote an optimal healing response.
